Fork Brain Cancer
Story
Hello, I’m Lucinda, I’m hosting a Longest Table in 2019 because I’m passionate about changing the terrifying statistics of Brain Cancer in Australia in my lifetime.
For those of you who know me, know that I miraculously survived a Hemangioblastoma in 2015, this grew in my brainstem, an almost inoperarble part of the brain due to its sensitivity and function. The surgery was a success, yet the surgery and difficult tumour let me with right sided hemiplegia which I have tirelessly worked on improving in intense neuro rehabilitation over my last 4 years.
I am grateful for life every day, appreciating the small things as I’m hyper-aware of how easily they can be taken away. Many beautiful people I have met along my tumour journey have brain tumours/cancers too, many of them have heartbreakingly passed away, many of them continue to battle their tumours and debilitating symptoms daily. I have sat with friends and held them whilst their fears and grief leak out of their eyes, I call it ‘leaky love’, which is the kindest name for something as terrifying as a brain tumour/cancer diagnosis.
All funding raised at my Fork Brain Cancer lunch will go to the Neurosurgical Research Foundation here in Adelaide. The only research foundation in SA working specifically on bettering brain cancer treatment and ultimately finding a cure. I am so hopeful that as a community we can and will change the statistics of brain cancer and improve the lives of every day people like myself, like my friends bravely battling their tumours, who uncontrollably got dealt an ‘unfair’ hand in life. Together we can change the way future patients face these bastard tumours.
Fork Brain Cancer will be held in honour of the beautiful Hannah Philbey who passed away in June after her 4 year battle with brain cancer (stage 2 mixed Oligodendroglioma, changing to 4 Glioblastoma). She was a gorgeous wife, mummy, daughter, sister and friend to many. She is lovingly missed.
