Rob 'Wombat' Phillips

Story

Rob ‘Wombat’ Phillips was 51 and had hardly been sick a day in his life. He was a sporty, charismatic, funny man who loved a good time. His passions were footy, tennis, travelling, supporting the Adelaide crows and spending time with family and friends.

In October 2014 after about a month of sinus symptoms and vision, concentration and speech difficulties his optometrist sent him to Flinders Emergency. This unexpectantly ended up being his last day at work after 35 years as a successful and valued ANZ bank home loan manager and was proud to still be employed till his final days. The first of many MRIs revealed a glioblastoma (grade 4) tumor deep near the brain stem.

Following a full craniotomy by Dr. Matthew McDonald Rob woke without being able to walk or talk. To be told there is no cure and only 1-2 years to live was a shock. Rob underwent intensive rehab at FMC and Daw Park Repat Hospital. He worked hard, never giving up enduring hours of speech and physio therapy. He then followed with 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

By Christmas he was home with wife Sue and cats Penny and Leonard. His speech never fully returned and he required a walking stick. He was able to take short trips within South Australia with the help and support of family and friends.

Sadly in June 2016 after further chemo treatment Rob began experiencing leg and back pain which led to the discovery that the cancer had returned and travelled to the spine. This was unusual, unexpected and deemed extremely unlucky.

Unfortunately surgery was not an option and chemotherapy was stopped. Rob was bedridden and he unselfishly accepted care at Bethsalem for his final weeks as he was unable to return home. Rob passed away peacfully in his sleep on August 21st 2016 aged 53.

We hope through this memorial donation that fewer people endure the difficult journey that Rob went through.
